Better or worse, fashion trends are always changing. I am not personally a big fan of trends so much, I still believe in the basics. I have worn so many different colors and patterns in my 20+ years of the fashion trade. But I always come back to the basics. Though, you will need to update yourself time to time as the style changes in terms of the design.
Nowadays, the jacket length seems to be shorter, waist line is tighter, pants are slimmer and shorter.
However, gentlemen, it doesn't mean you should show your butt, you can't even button your front. The pants are so tight that you can't even sit, you know your thigh is big, but you still want to taper your pants to the bottom anyway and make them too short without cuffs. They look awful.
Everyone is different in their body shapes. Some men are big and tall, tall and skinny, some are short and slim, short and chunky. Not everyone could have the same look. It has to be proportioned. You have to know your body type and the basics, for you to play around with trends.
You may think the basics are boring, that may be the reason why none of the retailers are offering the basics. You should have a proper fit, choose basic colors like Navy and Grey in the suits, white and blue in the shirts. Then basically you can pick any colors and patters in the tie.
I get asked by college students lately, what color and style should be the first suit to own.
I would say, definitely solid in either Navy or Grey but more towards the Navy.
The style should be 2 button single breasted w/ notch lapel and side vents, plain front pants. You should always have a plain white shirt, the white shirt is versatile for any occasion.
The collar style is personal but I would recommend, regular or semi wide.
The cuffs are also personal but, recommend these.
And then plain black shoes with black belt
Wherever you buy your outfit, you should know how it should fit or at least deal with someone who knows.
